I read your advertisement in the Aug. 2007 CARP Magazine. I
have just reviewed the video clips. Wow! It sounds like my kind of
holiday. I will be looking into the possibility of joining you this
summer. Have a great summer and thanks for a very informative wedsite.

In Aug/Sept 1949 I was aboard t he Yellowknife Expeditor, owned by Earl Harcourts' Arctic Marine Ltd., when she sailed from Victoria, BC (where she had been converted from a wartime LCI, USA to a passenger-freighter) to Kodiak Island, across the Bering Strait, around Point Barrow and a record run to Tuktoyaktuk. After unloading material to
lighten the ship we sailed 1,200 miles up the Mackenzie River to Hay
River, then across Great Slave Lake to Yellowknife. I was a reporter with
the Victoria Daily Times and wrote many articles, both en route (carried in
the Times) and afterwards, notable a full illustrated article in "New
Liberty" magazine which appeard in Sept. 1950.
I also have 1200 feet of 8mm colored movie flm of the trip, which I now
have on a VCR tape.
As far as I know, the Norweta is NOT the old Yellowknife Expeditor, though
has some appearances, with a shortened bow. I once heard that the
Expeditor only ran between Hay River and Yellowknife for one or two
seasons, running afoul of a reef in Yellowknife Bay. I heard that the
engines were removed and she was scuttled off the mouth of the Mackenie
Delta.
Would love to hear from anyone with knowledge of the Yellowknife Expeditor
and/or it's crew. Capt. Fred Coe is long dead, as is 2nd mate Dick
Alexander.
Other crew members were: First mate John Evelyn; chief engineer Bill Rant,
2nd engr. John (Fergie) Ferguson, assistant engr. Stu McLeod, cook Meles
Boucher; deckhand John Forbes and Ozzie McComb (Dick Alexander''s
brother-in-law---bassoon player; Ross Galloway, deckhand, and (?) Lemieux
deckhand.
The RCAF's Arctic expert, FL/Lt. Scott Alexander joined the ship at Nome
and was our ice pilot, etc. through to Tukoyaktuk.
At Tuk-Tuk, we were joined by river pilots Jonas Lafferty and Len
McKinlay, and by Yellowknife Transportation Co's (parent of Arctic
Marine) General Manger Howie Wilson. I would be pleased to hear from anyone who has an interest in this
historic. I am now retired (I was PR Director of CP Air) and living
in West Vancouver. Jim McKeachie <jimmckeachie@shaw.ca>

I made this Fantastic Voyage in August '89 with my son
Jonathan who was 12 years old at the time. We didn't go on a fancy
cruise ship like the Norweta; we travelled by open jet boat and
camped nightly on shore along the Deh Cho with one of the great
NT guides and adventurers,Winter Lennie, who took us places that
most people haven't even heard of and introduced us to his friends
and family on the river. I hope you are well Winter and that life
has been good to you; we will never forget our trip and think about
you often, especially your invite to your house in Norman Wells
to meet your beautiful girlfriend for homecooking and the only real
shower we had en route. With best regards to all, Tom

Was the "Norweta" at one time the "Yellowknife
Expeditor?
I was Mate on the Expeditor during he short run as a passenger ship
from Hay River to Yellowknife way back in 1950-51.
Was also skipper & mate on the Sandy Jane ,Richard E and the
Saline with Yellowknife Transportation for a few years after that.
Best of luck in this endeavour.
